Ankara Metropolitan Municipality took action to produce food for street animals. The Department of Health Affairs started food production at the Sincan Temporary Animal Care Home and Rehabilitation Center, using surplus food and foodstuffs from recycling. The Metropolitan Municipality, which will produce one ton of food daily in the first stage, aims to save 3.5 million TL per year.

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, in a first in Turkey, pressed the button for food production with a daily capacity of three tons. The Department of Health Affairs recycled surplus foodstuffs and started to produce food in the facility established in Sincan Temporary Animal Care Home and Rehabilitation Center.

3.5 million TL savings targeted

The food obtained in the facility, which started to operate with a daily production capacity of one ton in the first phase, will be used to feed stray animals in the capital. The Department of Health Affairs aims to save 3.5 million TL per year thanks to the food produced from the recycling of food.

Stating that they have implemented one of the largest formula production projects in Turkey with a daily production capacity of three tons, Seyfettin Aslan, Head of Health Affairs Department, made the following statements:

"Restaurant leftovers are always on the agenda for feeding stray animals, but it is not always possible to separate objects such as plastic forks, knives, toothpicks and cigarette butts from the food collected in practice. For this reason, it is important for large institutions and organizations to make use of surplus food, which is called boiler bottom. As Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, we have established this facility in order to utilize the leftovers from the bottom of the boiler. At the same time, we cooperate with the Public Bread Factory to collect non-standard bread and dry bread that cannot be sold. In the first phase, we started trial production with one ton per day. Thanks to our own food production, we will save 3.5 million TL per year and use this amount to meet other needs of street animals."

Aslan called on all private and public institutions and organizations, from restaurants to cafes, and food production factories to give their food waste to the Metropolitan Municipality:

"There are many private and public institutions and organizations in Ankara. If these institutions and organizations give us their boiler bottom food scraps, we will turn them into food and use them for feeding stray animals. Organizations that want to give their surplus food can contact the Metropolitan Municipality."
