Amendments to the Law on the Protection of Animals were approved by the Parliament's Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Committee. If these amendments are passed by the Parliament, the costs and labor needs for the collection and care of stray animals will increase. While the cost and labor force preparations for the collection of stray animals are being planned, Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality's step drew attention.

The factory to be established within the municipality will produce cat and dog food. In this way, the municipality, which will not have to buy food from outside, plans to increase its production capacity and sell it in the future. Secretary General Zafer Aynalı stated that the factory will be established as a precaution against those who try to make unfair profits through food production. The Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) had deciphered food lobbies exploiting the problem of stray stray dogs and identified some irregularities under the guise of animal welfare. This initiative of Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality will be important against malicious attempts made under the name of animal protection.

DISTRICT MUNICIPALITIES WILL ALSO SET UP SHELTERS

Under the new law proposal, municipalities with a population of more than 75 thousand are obliged to establish animal hospices by December 31, 2024. According to this regulation, Aziziye, Palandöken and Yakutiye Municipalities in Erzurum are also expected to establish animal shelters.

"WE MADE OUR PREPARATIONS BEFORE THE BILL"

Noting that only Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality has a 10 thousand square meter animal care center in the city, Zafer Aynalı, Secretary General of the Metropolitan Municipality, said, "This will reduce the burden of the animal care center within the Metropolitan Municipality. Because stray animals in the districts were also brought here. As municipalities establish nursing homes, animals will be taken there as well. But we made our preparations before the law proposal. We will start working on expanding the area of the animal care center against any situation. Our capacity is sufficient for now, but we will act with the possibility that the number of incoming animals may increase."
