Thanks to the Cat and Dog Food Production Facility brought to the district by the Altınova Municipality of Yalova, nearly 1500 kilograms of food waste that would have gone to waste in the last 2 months has been transformed into 600 kilograms of cat and dog food. Thus, while an important waste is prevented, the food prepared from waste that would have gone to waste is distributed free of charge to animal lovers in packages of 2 kilograms each.

Gains to the economy

Altınova Municipality, which has realized important investments in order to carry Altınova to a healthy future, is bringing food waste that would otherwise be thrown away back into the economy with an important recycling project. The Cat and Dog Food Production Facility, which was built with the aim of utilizing the food waste collected from the factories and catering companies in the shipyards in the district, was fully commissioned 2 months ago after 4 months of trial production. In the facility, which has a monthly production capacity of approximately 1 ton of food, 600 kilograms of food was produced in the last 2 months.

First and only in the Marmara Region

Food waste collected from factories and catering companies is mixed in appropriate ratios and processed in state-of-the-art machines under the supervision of veterinarians. The prepared food is filled into vacuum bags of 2 kilograms each and distributed free of charge to animal lovers who request it. While 20 percent of the food produced is used in the shelter of Atınova Municipality, the remaining 80 percent is distributed to citizens who keep animals in their homes. Thanks to the facility, which is the first and only one in the Marmara Region, animal lovers who have the opportunity to obtain free food also make an important contribution to their family budgets.

Starting from Scratch

Altınova Mayor Dr. Metin Oral said that the Cat and Dog Food Production Facility is one of the pillars of the recycling project they implemented with the theme of 'Starting from Zero' within the scope of the zero waste project.

Stating that as Altınova Municipality, they support the Zero Waste Project, which is carried out under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Mayor Oral said, "In this facility, food waste that would otherwise go to waste turns into food for cats and dogs. We work together with our animal lovers on this issue. There have been some problems with stray animals recently, but we take care of those animals together. We provide free food support to our citizens who feed animals in their homes and on the streets. Our catering companies also provide us with an important support by giving us the food waste to be thrown away, I would like to thank them. In this way, we both prevent waste and contribute to the family economy of our animal lovers with free food support."
