Ahmet ATMACA/GAZİANTEP, (DHA)- In GAZİANTEP, 1 ton of food waste collected daily by the Metropolitan Municipality is transformed into cat and dog food in the facility and delivered to approximately 4 thousand street animals in the city.
Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Department of Wildlife Protection transforms 1 ton of food waste into ready-to-eat food for cats and dogs with the food production facility established in the animal shelter and rehabilitation center. Food waste collected from public institutions and restaurants is processed and packaged by adding nutrients containing vitamins and minerals, and then delivered to street animals at 200 points throughout the city. Celal Özsöyler, Head of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and Zoo, said that with this work, they both prevent food waste and provide food for stray animals throughout the city.
'WE PRODUCE FOOD WITH HIGH PROTEIN VALUES'
Özsöyler said that 1 ton of waste food collected daily is transformed into food in a sterile environment after the necessary processes. Özsöyler said that the food obtained in the facility contains high levels of vitamins and minerals, "We have feeding points in 200 regions across the city. We especially collect food waste and process it in our facility and turn it into food. In our facility, we distribute the food we obtain from 1 ton of waste daily to both our street animals and animal-loving citizens. Protein values are very high due to the minerals and vitamins in it," he said.
'WE PREVENT WASTE WHILE TAKING CARE OF STRAY ANIMALS'
Özsöyler explained that they both protect stray animals and try to prevent waste with their food production work and said, "With this application, we both prevent waste and support all our stray animals. We serve stray animals in 780 neighborhoods in 9 districts. We deliver 1 ton of food that we produce daily to approximately 4 thousand stray animals."
